Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for your interest in studying English in the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Augsburg!

We would be very pleased to welcome every student to our department, yet we understand that studying English is not for everyone. We invite you to take a closer look at our website and catalog of courses for a first glimpse of what you may expect from studying at our Department. We also devised a questionnaire that should help you answer the question: “Is studying English for me?” This test will not be graded but you will have to submit the completed test at enrolment. The test, however, will provide you with feedback about how well you would fit in one of our degree programs: the academic Bachelor in English or the teacher-training program for English.

As the result does not matter (only completing the test does), be as honest as possible when answering any questions that ask for your personal views. It will become relatively clear which answers we might want from the ‘ideal’ student, but simply telling us what we want to hear will not help you gain insight into whether our study programs would be right for you.

The orientation test consists of four separate parts: Literature and Culture; Linguistics; Language Practice; and Teaching English. Students interested in our academic Bachelor should complete only the first three parts, whereas students who are interested in teaching English should complete the entire test. The test will take you around 45 minutes to complete and you will receive feedback after each section. Do complete all the relevant sections, however, as the feedback in one section may differ from other sections.

We hope you will find this test useful,

The Department of English and American Studies
